The 2018 Canberra and Capital Region Truffle Festival kicks off on June 1st and marks the start of truffle season in one of Australia’s key truffle growing areas.

This magical, wintry time of year brings with it a good supply of the Canberra region’s highly prized quality French Black Truffles. Some of the Canberra region’s best foodie venues including restaurants, wineries, bars, cafes, truffieres and food markets are on board as partners this year to bring you the most amazing truffle-filled events. Get hunting in the popular truffle hunts, learn in master classes and cooking demonstrations by esteemed local chefs, taste from truffle inspired menus and tasting sessions and gain knowledge in truffle growing and Canberra's own native truffles.

One of the highlights of the festival is the Truffle Hunts. Every weekend from the end of June to the end of July there will be truffle hunts ate or more of the of the local truffieres (that’s a truffle growing farm). The growers are inviting you along while they they have their dogs and truffle hunters in the field, collecting truffles. They are doing this as a way to help everyone learn how truffles grow, found and are harvested. They usually take place at 10 or 10.30am, they will have have a small bus that will pick you up from a central location depending on where the farm is. If you get there earlier, there’s time for a coffee.

The price varies but is generally around $80 per person, kids 6 to 16 years $20 and little kids (6 or under) free. You will be walking across (often wet) grass so you should have sensible shoes.

They limit the numbers to around 25 because they want you to get up close to a truffle and see what’s happening. And so they can watch where you’re walking so you don’t step too close to the trees where the truffles growing. You’ll usually have the option of buying a truffle from the grower (you’ll 4-5 grams per person for a main meal)
