For decades Willunga in South Australia was the home of almonds in Australia, at one time producing 90% of the country's crop. Today this kernel still holds a special place in local life on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Twenty years ago Helen Bennetts joined this farming community and started collecting recipes and almond information. Willunga Almonds is the culmination of that almond journey and we have two copies of this just released book to be won!
Around July each year the Almond Blossum festival is held and the community gathers to toast the opening flowers. That this festival is still going and almond trees line many streets in the town, it's small wonder that Helen Bennetts, with her interest in growing and cooking, became enamoured of the humble almond.
The almond's history goes back centuries, it was fed to Pharaohs and hailed for its health benefits so recipes often reflect these origins with dishes from the Mediterranean and Middle East in particular.
In Willunga Almonds, Helen Bennetts presents specially selected recipes that reflect the influence of the almond’s history as cooked in South Australian home kitchens with produce from the Fleurieu Peninsula: grapes, wine, olives, oil and seasonal fruit and vegetables.
