Ever wondered what a walking holiday might be like? Does the thought of stopping and actually looking at the landscape around you appeal?  It's so peaceful you can hear yourself think and the clean fresh air energises your mind and body.  And there's the lure of tasting authentic gourmet goodies along the way...

Our friends at Hedonistic Hiking explain what's involved and the attraction:

Hedonistic Hiking is a small company, owned and operated by Jackie and Mick Parsons, offering  guided gourmet walking holidays in Italy, Slovenia and Australia. Together they have worked for over 30 years  in the travel industry, both in Europe and Australia.

Jackie and Mick divide their time between Tuscany and Victoria, having homes in both places, and they are passionate about the food, the wine and the walking of both countries. The Italian tours run from May to October in Tuscany, Umbria, Abruzzo, Piedmont, the Italian Alps, Friuli and across the border into beautiful Slovenia. In Australia the tours run from November to April and are centred around the Victorian High Country, the King Valley and the Great Ocean Walk.

The tour groups are small and friendly (maximum 16 people) and the walking is enjoyably challenging, while the support vehicle enables guests to walk as much or as little as they please each day. All the hotels along the way are hand-picked for their charm, quality and local authenticity.

A mixture of fine dining experiences and gourmet picnic lunches ensures that everyone gets to sample the very best food and wines the regions have to offer, and the emphasis is always on fresh, locally-sourced produce. Mick is a professional chef as well as a walking guide and often prepares dinners himself for guests on the tours, carefully matching each course with premium local wines.

As Jackie explains: "The philosophy behind all Hedonistic Hiking holidays, whether in Australia or Italy, is to provide a truly authentic encounter with the country and its people. This encompasses where we stay, what we eat, who we meet and the places we visit, far from the usual tourist traps.  Our hikes are meticulously researched by us and we are proud of the level of personal service we can offer and attention to every little detail during  a tour."

One of the greatest pleasures of travelling is exploring other culinary traditions and Hedonistic Hikers have many opportunities to visit local markets, try hands-on cooking classes and visit  regional vineyards. The most memorable moments of a tour can often be time spent with people who share their gastronomic passions:  cheese makers, wine growers, truffle hunters or mushroom gatherers.

Travelling on foot  gives you a rare insight into a region. Whether you are walking through a patchwork of flower-filled meadows and blossoming orchards,  waving wheat fields and ripening vineyards, or lush green valleys and snow-capped mountains Hedonistic Hiking holidays are a genuine feast for all the senses.
