In the beautiful Central Highlands of NSW, at Canowindra, Jason and Rebecca O'Dea run their boutique vineyard, Pig in the House, which converted to organic practices in 2001, subsequently gained certification and has now won awards and acclaim.

To answer your first question, the property was originally a farm for pigs whose free range extended beyond the paddocks into the nearby house!

Jason is from one of the oldest winemaking families in the region with their (also organic) winery at Windowrie. He and Rebecca have an ultimate desire to live in a chemical free, sustainable environment producing wine that reflects where they live and what they believe in.

Whilst the move to organic was initially prompted by how close their home was to the vineyard and the impact that conventional vineyard practices might have on their (also free range) children, Jason says that the health of the soil and vines now makes it a quality decision as well.

That quality is being reflected in wine critics comments and awards, including a trophy for Best Organic/Biodynamic Wine at the 2017 Royal Melbourne Wine Show.

Here are tasting notes from some of their recent releases which can also be tasted at The Agrestic Grocer in Orange.

Pig in the House Rosé  2018

The 2017 Pig in the House Organic Rosé is the first release and is made from sangiovese with the slightest addition of shiraz.

Stylistically we are aiming to capture the varietal characters. Flavour wise, this was achieved at around 11.7 baume when the berries where showing vibrant red fruit favours.

The wine is made solely from free run juice and treated as an aromatic white in order to highlight the crisp, berry flavours. We fermented a small portion of the wine in older, seasoned oak in order to build some complexity and texture.

The wine was then blended with a touch (0.6%) of Shiraz which adding subtle complexity and underscoring the beautiful natural salmon pink colour.

Perfect for social spring sipping and tapas.

Pig in the House Sauvignon Blanc 2018

The Pig in the House Sauvignon Blanc is an aromatic wine demonstrating varietal passionfruit, gooseberry and citrus aromas. The flavours of the bouquet follow onto the palate and are complimented with fresh acidity which adds to the refreshing nature of this wine.

This wine is a great accompaniment to light salads, seafood and sunny afternoons.

Pig in the House Shiraz 2016

The Pig in the House Shiraz is.... excellent! It's a wine which, at first sip, does induce a raised eyebrow, a nice colour with purples and reds. Aromatically the wine is Cowra and Shiraz, with dark berry fruits of blackberry, and ripe cherries. Aromatic spices are mixed with white and black pepper and vanilla.

The palate is a well balanced and will be appreciated by most red wine drinkers. It has primary fruit purity, and exceptional flavour density. The persistence of flavour is this wine's true hallmark, where flavours linger for longer, and flavour complexity develops during this appreciable period.

A good wine which will compliment conversation or a Bistecca alla Fiorentina, cooked naturally over live coals. Enjoy!
