The O’Dea family have added a new wine to their Windowrie ‘Family Reserve’ range with the release of their 2014 Windowrie ‘Family Reserve’ Pinot Noir ($30), made from grapes grown in the cold NSW central highlands of Orange.

The new pinot noir is the inaugural release for Windowrie. “We have been working closely with a number of liked-minded family vignerons who share our passion for quality,” commented Windowrie General Manager and Viticulturist Jason O’Dea.

“This parcel of grapes is from a vineyard on the north eastern slopes of Mount Canobolas situated at an elevation of 950 metres. The vineyard is starting to mature, having been planted in 1999 with Pinot Noir clones 114, 115 and MV6.”

Over the past decade Windowrie have extended the reach of their vineyards from their home in Cowra. The family sources grapes from within 100 miles of the winery including the Hilltops and Orange Regions, as well as their original plantings in Cowra.

“The diversity of micros climes from within our 100 mile radius, along with the breadth of soil types and temperatures resulting from the range of elevations from 350 metre up to 950 metres, provides us a fantastic variety of fruit and flavours,” continued Jason.

The new 2014 Windowrie ‘Family Reserve’ Pinot Noir was harvested in late March with the grapes cold soaked for three days in order to inveigle more of the aromatics and enhance the structural components. A proportion of the wine was fermented in open fermenters with natural yeast.

“We are aiming to make a balanced and harmonious Pinot Noir that is representative of the vineyard site,” explained Windowrie Winemaker, Anthony D’Onise. “We are looking to draw out flavours of raspberry through to dark cherry alongside herbs, spice and a touch of char.”

The new pinot noir joins Windowrie ‘Family Reserve’ Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Gris.
