Mount View in the Hunter Valley is home to boutique winery Briar Ridge – a little off the beaten track and once perhaps a bit of a hidden gem. That was until Gourmet Traveller Wine awarded it Best Tasting Experience: Hunter Valley for 2018.

The overall visitor experiences was judged as 'great' and their wines, which include Hunter classics as well as some alternatives, were called 'outstanding'.

Now, in an Australian first, Briar Ridge has released a co-fermented shiraz verduzzo. The wine was made with grapes from their vineyard in the  Orange region where consultant winemaker Gwyn Olsen has been experimenting with the verduzzo variety [Ed: a white wine variety from NE Italy, often slightly sweet.]

Briar Ridge 2018 Shiraz Verduzzo 

Vintage: It was a warm and dry harvest in Orange this year, which saw the region experience a large bushfire on Mount Canobolas during harvest. Thankfully the wind direction was kind to the resulting in no adverse effects on the fruit.

The warm and dry conditions were perfect ripening conditions for both the red and white varieties producing wines of great flavour intensity and tannin density.

Vineyard: the vineyard in Orange sits at around 750m above sea level in soils derived from volcanic basalt rocks. The crop yields are relatively low, producing excellent concentration of fruit flavour. This cool climate region produces vibrant, fragrant whites and crunchy reds.

Winemaking: the shiraz and verduzzo were both hand picked in the vineyard on the same day. The verduzzo was added directly to the open fermenter as whole bunches and the shiraz was chilled and destemmed over top.

After a couple of days of cold soak this wine was allowed to warm and begin fermenting with wild yeast. Only pumping over was used, no plunging, to ensure the verduzzo remained as whole clusters and that the tannin was not over extracted.

Once ferment was finished the resulting wine was pressed off skins into a stainless steel tank. Refrigeration was used to settle the wine before the wine was bottled.

Tasting notes: this single site wine from the Orange vineyard is a co-ferment of 70% shiraz and 30% whole bunch verduzzo.

A bright, floral and expressive wine that has been made without preservatives nor fining aids [Ed: hence vegan-friendly.] The shiraz provides spice and red fruit notes of raspberry and white pepper along with a fine tannin structure, whilst the verduzzo adds its natural acidity, length and mid palate weight.

Cellaring: drink now! This medium bodied wine is perfect for enjoying either chilled or at room temperature.
