The annual Wine Communicators of Australia (WCA) Sydney Royal Wine Show lunch on Friday 14th February saw the industry come together to celebrate the show’s trophy winners as well as to present the inaugural 2014 ‘WCA Legend of the Vine Award’.

In recognition for his work over the past 35 years the 2014 recipient was Mudgee’s David Lowe.

The ‘WCA Legend of the Vine Award’ recognises a member of the wine industry who has made an outstanding and lasting contribution to the wine business and industry at large, as well as display a strong affinity for the objectives of WCA.

WCA Chair Angie Bradbury said WCA wanted to create an Award that acknowledges the passion, drive and leadership, particularly in communication, of an Australian wine identity.

"The inaugural winner of this Award is no stranger to many of us. He has sat on committees, fronted lunches and wine shows, acted as spokesperson, mentored many and, in doing so, earned the respect of their peers," Ms Bradbury said.

"WCA's maxim is 'Engage, Connect, Learn, Inspire'. This industry has plenty to be inspired about and that includes the number of individuals who lead by example and add their own skilled and distinctive voice to the Australian wine story.”

The 2014 ‘WCA Legend of the Vine Award’ is nominated by the WCA Board and State Chapters, with the winner chosen by the Wine Communicators of Australia Board.

“While the wine industry continues to present challenges that we all need to step up and respond too, there is still not a day that I don't love it,” said David upon receiving this award.

“This award is delightful to receive but hold the coffin nails. I've got a lot to achieve yet and I relish the opportunity to keep getting stuck in, both through service and through making more really splendid wines.”

As the 2014 recipient, David Lowe received life-time membership to WCA, joining a highly-respected list of names, which includes Phil Laffer, James Halliday, Chris Anstee and Lyndey Milan.
