Trentham Estate wine range

The Murphy family from Ireland were early settlers in Merbein in 1909 and amongst the first to plant vineyards in the region, in south west NSW, 15km from Mildura. In 1952 the first shiraz vines were planted in what is now part of Trentham Estate and a handful of these remain on the Estate today.

In the intervening years,  the family has added a winery, cellar door and restaurant all of which combine to create an impressive riverside destination.

In 2005 the La Famiglia range of Italian varietals was launched and ten years later, in late 2015, the range underwent a refresh with updated labels and a name change to The Family.

Here are tasting notes for Trentham Estate's The Family's current range which includes vermentino, pinot grigio, moscato, sangiovese rosé, nebbiolo and frizzante maestri.

2015 Vermentino

An attractive, aromatic white variety grown in southern Italy, mainly on the island of Sardinia. The grapes are usually picked early to retain crisp acidity and produce wines with lively lemony characters.

The Family Vermentino is light green in colour with lifted lemony aromas. A delicate and crisp wine showing fresh citrus flavours of lemon and grapefruit.

Winemakers notes: The harvesting occurred in the cool of the night and immediately the grapes were transported to the winery where they were gently crushed and pressed. The juice was inoculated with yeast strains specially selected to enhance the naturally occurring fruit characteristics. The resultant wine was settled naturally before stabilisation and filtration prior to bottling. This wine was bottled in August 2015.

The 2015 growing season was close to perfect with mild dry weather allowing even ripening, resulting in well balanced fruit with great varietal character.

Food matching: Enjoy this wine while it is young as a pre-dinner drink or with seafood or white meats.

2015 Sangiovese Rose

Sangiovese is the most widely planted grape variety in Italy and is part of Italy's history, dating back to the Roman Empire where the name Sangiovese translates to "blood of Jove", the Roman Jupiter (Roman mythology). The variety produces diverse styles of wine ranging from Chianti through to full bodied super Tuscans. Sangiovese grapes generally produce medium bodied, soft wines with sweet berry flavours and fine tannins.

Light pink in colour with aromas of strawberry and rose petal. On the palate, juicy red berry fruits are nicely balanced with gentle acidity. A light and soft wine with a fresh long finish.

Winemakers notes: Harvested during the cool of the night the grapes were crushed and pumped via a chiller into the press. The grapes were left in the press overnight to extract the colour and flavour from the skins. After gently pressing the juice was inoculated with a yeast strain selected to enhance the natural fruit flavours. Post ferment the wine was stabilised and filtered before bottling.

The 2015 growing season was close to perfect with mild dry weather allowing even ripening, resulting in well balanced fruit with great varietal character.

Food matching: Enjoy with an antipasto plate, seafood or Asian cuisine.

2015 Pinot Grigio

The grape variety is closely related to Pinot Noir and is known as Pinot Grigio in Italy or Pinot Gris in France. The grapes are pink to light purple in colour and are harvested at different ripeness levels depending on the wine style being made. Grapes are normally picked earlier for the Grigio style.

A delicate white wine displaying characters of lemon zest, green apple and pear. This makes an ideal wine to enjoy chilled on a hot day.

Winemakers notes: The grapes were harvested in early February during the coolest part of the day to protect the freshly picked fruit then swiftly transported to the winery where it is crushed, pressed and clarified prior to fermentation. Fermentation occured over a ten day period with a specially selected yeast strain. Post fermentation, the wine was stabilised and clarified prior to bottling.

The 2015 growing season was close to perfect with mild dry weather allowing even ripening, resulting in well balanced fruit with great varietal character.

Food matching: A great food wine that goes well with seafood, sushi or poultry.

2015 Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the king of north western Italian red varieties notably in the regions of Piedmont and Lombardy. In the vineyard Nebbiolo does have variable crops with fruit colour ranging from light to deeply coloured red. The fruit matures late in the season with low sugar and high acid levels which makes it well suited for warmer climates.

A lighter red with complex aromas of spice and berry fruits. On the palate fruit flavours of blackberry and plum are with complex spice and earthy characters. Ripe tannins provide great length and balance.

Winemakers notes: The grapes were crushed, de-stemmed and transferred into tank and inoculated with yeast. Fermented over an eight day period with regular pump overs to maintain a consistent temperature and to aid colour and tannin extraction from the skins. After pressing, a portion of the wine was matured in French oak barrels. The wine was then blended, stabilised and clarified before being bottled.

Warm weather in November stimulated budburst two weeks early in the region. The trend continued with the grapes reaching maturity earlier than usual. Consistent mild temperatures and dry conditions resulted in even ripening and high quality fruit for the 2014 vintage.

Food matching: Nebbiolo is a wine with Italian origin that goes best with Italian food. Enjoy this with pasta puttanesca or wood fired pizza.

2015 Moscato

Blended from Muscat varieties which are well renowned for their intense fragrant characters.

Pale green straw in colour with lifted aromatics of musk and tropical fruit. Light and sweet on the palate with juicy tropical fruit flavours. This Moscato is bottled with a light spritz which makes for a very refreshing style.

Winemakers notes: THarvested in early February the grapes were de-stemmed and pumped into the press with only the best quality free run juice taken. The juice was then clarified before inoculating with a selected yeast. The fermentation was stopped by chilling to 0°C. By doing this, the natural sweetness is maintained and a lower level of alcohol is produced. The wine was then stabilised, clarified and bottled.

The 2015 growing season was close to perfect with mild, dry weather producing excellent fruit. This allowed harvesting at optimum maturity, with good balance between fruit flavour and grape ripeness.

Food matching: Deserts are Moscato's forte, pairing superbly with meringue and fruit based deserts. Also goes very nicely with a cheese platter.

2015 Frizzante Maestri

A very new variety for Australia, Maestri originates from the central Italian region of Emilia which produces the world famous Lambrusco style; a fizzy, fruity sweet red wine made to enjoy while young and fresh. In Emilia the Maestri is only one of several varieties used for for these wines. It is late ripening with fantastic berry fruit characters and an ideal balance of sweetness and acidity.

Showing vivid red and purple colour with fresh lifted cherry and spice, there is excellent balance of sweetness and zest – an exciting wine style to be enjoyed while young and fresh.

Winemakers notes: Grown on the Estates vineyard, the grapes were night harvested, crushed and kept on skins for 24 hours to extract colour and flavour before pressing. The juice was fermented by a select yeast strain to maximise fruit flavour and freshness. While still fermenting the wine was chilled to stop the fermentation and so retain natural sweetness and the frizzante lift. It also results in a lower alcohol level.

The 2015 growing season was close to perfect with mild, dry weather producing excellent fruit. This allowed harvesting at optimum maturity, with good balance between fruit flavour and grape ripeness.

Food matching: Enjoy chilled with antipasto or curries. Also great with spicy Asian dishes or desserts.
