Simply good food - by Neil Perry

Simply Good Food is about just that: Neil Perry’s collection of simple and produce-driven recipes that he likes to cook for family and friends.

It is certainly typical of Perry’s style, putting twists on favourites and using varied produce in many different types of recipes.

His Egg Noodle Salad with Barbeque Duck and Hoisin Sauce is a highlight; his more traditional Guacamole and Mexican Salsa with Corn Chips is simple and tasty, as is his Deep-fried Chicken with Garlic and Peppercorns.

For more of a ‘refined dining’ experience there is Linguine with Lobster and Prosciutto, and the delicious Honey-braised Duck with Almonds and Olives.

The recipes are many and varied. They are categorised into cocktails, soups, salads, pasta, chicken, pork, beef, veal, lamb, Asian banquets, Mediterranean tables, Mexican feasts and sweet things. For the discerning home cook this gives a varied mix, and makes Simply Good Food a long term addition to the kitchen library thanks to the subtle complexity that comes with trying to master Neil Perry recipes.

Within the recipes Perry also suggests alternative ingredients and substitutes to make the dishes adaptable for the seasons and individual budgets. Once such example is the Thai-style Squid Salad where he suggests you can substitute with prawns, fish, chicken, beef or pork.

The only things missing from Simply Good Food are photographs of some dishes (this only applies to a minority of recipes, thankfully).

Overall if you are a Neil Perry fan this offering will not disappoint as it contains many fantastic recipes that will have your dinner guests smiling. For those new to Neil Perry browse before buying.

Simply Good Food by Neil Perry is published in Australia by Murdoch Books (Sydney 2013; hc, 240 pp) and retails in Australia for RRP A$49.99
