This is Not a Wine Guide by Chris Morrison

Many wine books come across my desk and each time I wonder “How will I review this?” and “How is it different to other books that give scores and rank wines?” In a wine-publishing environment where wine guides often have more similarities than points of difference, Chris Morrison's new book is written to stand out.

While This is Not a Wine Guide is packed with information to guide your wine-drinking experience, it comes from a food-orientated viewpoint. I think it would be fair to say many of us are eaters first and the wine we consume alongside our meal comes second. As a result, the old rules for choosing wine need updating and a little personalisation.

Morrison's approach to wine will give you the confidence to make wine choices based on your own sense of taste and the way you like to eat, drink and live.

Like the name suggests, this is not a wine guide but rather a lifestyle guide. No longer will you feel the need to only drink white wine with fish or red wine with red meat. You will also learn that tasting notes, scores and reviews do not always tell the whole story, and that sommeliers are a valuable resource rather than a money-grabbing enemy!

As you read through you will find chapters such as: The New Rules, The Sommelier and The Fundamentals. In the chapter on the Fundamentals of Wine, expect to learn about the different types of wine and some key terms and definitions that any wine lover should know.

Subsequent chapters include A Matter of Taste, Matching Food and Wine, The Restaurant Experience, Serving Wine at Home and Collecting Wine. Now, while theese chapters sound like many other wine guides, the advice given is a lot more accepting of modern wine drinking. Morrison speaks of understanding the context in which you will be drinking the wine: is it a party, business event or simply a social drink? He discusses how you, as the drinker, need to be flexible in your thinking in order to improve your wine-drinking experience.

This advice is given alongside some great tips about what to expect when ordering and drinking wine at a restaurant, acknowledging that this can be intimidating for those new to wine.

This is Not a Wine Guide finishes with some sound advice about collecting wine and how, no matter how limiting your space or budget, you can have a working wine collection to call on when visitors arrive or when you simply want something to match your dinner.

This is a wine book for people who love food, would love to learn more about wine and how to enjoy it by complementing their food choices. Refreshingly different!
