Once upon a time, hand-painted and hand-crafted signs brought colour and vibrancy to Australian cities and towns. Artful, kitsch, and at times hilarious, Brady Michaels and Dale Campisi seek to record these now fading signs – finding a record of Australian social history along the way.

Keen photographer Brady Michaels has recorded an impressive collection of signs – from old-time ads for household goods to garages, Chinese restaurants, motels, milk bars and even relics from our more recent past –  which are accompanied by commentary from Dale Campisi on the significance of these nostalgic images.

The pair have travelled far and wide across Australia collating a comprehensive assortment of signs and stories along the way.

The collection echoes a movement to preserve similar signs seen in places like NYC and Paris, finding beauty in the famous and not-so-famous signs from Broken Hill to Surfers Paradise to Launceston, and everywhere in between.

A fun book that would be great on the shack coffee table, or for a Christmas gift.
