Australian Wine Vintages 2018: 35th Edition by Rob Geddes MW

Just in time for the gift-giving season, Geddes A Drink Publications is delighted to announce the release of the 35th edition of the Australian Wine Vintages for 2018, widely known as The Gold Book due to its signature gold hard-backed cover.

First published in 1979, Australian Wines Vintages was Australia’s very first wine guide. Nudging 40 years in publication, The Gold Book is a strictly independent and comprehensive reference and review guide to Australia’s greatest wineries and most significant vintages for the benefit of even the most educated on the subject.

The Australian Wines Vintages reviews are the result of a community of highly qualified tasters from across the wine industry, including winemakers, wine buyers, consultants and sommeliers.

Putting together the 528 page publication is a task of epic proportions. Thousands of wines are tasted over a period of 12 months. The final product reflects the grit, passion, commitment and devotion of all involved.

The 'Gold Book' is an ode to the love of wine and the result is an Australian wine tome that arguably surpasses all wine reference books on the market.

From the wine trade’s perspective, the reviews in Australian Wine Vintages are closest to the Australian Wine Show scores of any independent review of Australian wine. Australian Wine Vintages prides itself on the unadulterated delivery of wine reviews that are not influenced by market forces and commercial agendas.

Easy to navigate, wines are listed in alphabetical order accompanied by reduced scale labels for clear identifying. Each wine is awarded a star rating, points out of 100 and features a comprehensive tasting note.

Australian Wine Vintages is not just for the serious collector but also speaks to the wine lover on a budget.

One of the most valuable sections of the book is the The Top Ten Wines for Every Budget starting with $20 and under, with number one being the 2011 De Bortoli Deen de Bortoli Vat 5 Botrytis Semillon at $14, and finishing with $70 and under and the 2010 Alkoomi Wines Blackbutt Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec Cabernet Franc at $62.

Other handy features include every vintage currently available in retail, recommended retail price, optimal year for drinking and alcohol content plus a quick guide to varieties and regions.

The quick guide to what regions are renowned for which varieties, blends and wine styles is particularly useful. For example pinotage is grown in the King Valley and mourvedre in Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale.

There is a list of Australia’s Top 100 and for those who don’t know their lees from their length, a dictionary of tasting terms is at the back along with a map of Australia’s wine regions and a section for personal notes.

Author and Master of Wine, Rob Geddes has been penning Australian Wines Vintages for the past decade. He says there has never been a greater need for an independent wine review than now.

“Australia has recently seen an increase in many lesser quality wines bottled to keep up with demand, particularly with the ever popular shiraz. In terms of navigating customers through this huge market to find quality, The Gold Book is a valuable tool."

Geddes has noted that even past editions of Australian Wine Vintages are gaining traction on the secondary market as consumers seek credible reviews of older vintages. The Gold Book has almost become an investment like the exceptional vintage wines reviewed on its pages.

“Like good wine, Australian Wine Vintages becomes sought after with age and increases in value,” says Rob Geddes MW.

For the digitally savvy consumer, the guide can also be accessed through the Australian Wine Vintages app available at the App Store for $9.99. Purchasers of the book gain access to the app and its content free of charge.

The hip pocket sized Australian Wine Vintages 2018 makes the perfect Christmas, personal or corporate gift for anyone interested in wine from the casual dabbler to the serious collector.

About the author

Rob Geddes MW is a professional wine reviewer, author, judge and consultant with more than 30 years’ experience in the Australian and international wine industries. He was brought up on a farm in the viticultural region of South Australia’s Clare Valley and developed an uncanny talent in his early twenties for identifying the origin and variety of wine by taste alone.

Admitted to the prestigious Institute of Masters of Wine in 1992, Robert is the author of several wine books including Australian Wine Vintages (editions 26-35) and A Good Nose & Great Legs – the art of wine from the vine to the table (see link below).

Today Geddes is highly influential in the Chinese market. He has a studio in Shanghai and presents wines to high-end consumers. He is the first Australian wine reviewer to launch a WeChat digital account in China with any audience of tens of millions.

He regularly appears as a wine commentator on radio and TV. Although Robert has tasted wines dating back to the 1838 vintage he says his favourite wine is ‘the next one’.

Australian Wine Vintages 2018 by Rob Geddes MW is published by Geddes a Drink (Sydney, NSW; Nov 2017; hb;). It is available nationally in selected book and wine retailers for RRP $34.95 or digitally via Amazon and Kindle or directly from the author robgeddesmw.com
