The 33rd edition is full, yet again, of gold tasting advice

Back in 2009 Robin Bradley, then author of Australian Wine Vintages, took on co-author Rob Geddes MW for the 26th edition in preparation of his retirement. That edition contained 333 pages in a slimline book.
Fast forward to the 33rd edition and there’s 470+ pages reflecting the increasing number and quality of Australian wines.
With so many wines available, it’s often hard to know where to start but wine guides like this and of course, James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion and Jeremy Oliver's Australian Wine Annual, are made with both the novice and more experienced wine-lover in mind.
The (still) pocket-sized book includes tasting notes for over 5,000 wines from 350 wineries (including 40 new ones) plus of course, helpful Top 100 and Gold Star lists.
This year Mr Geddes says the wines are even better than ever and there is a more diverse range of wineries included.
And to prove it’s not just the bigger wineries on the list, the first (alphabetically) on the Top 100 is the 2012 A. Retief Gundagai Shiraz. Not a well-known winery, this boutique label is made by Alex Retief, one of Australia’s next generation of great winemakers. It may be worth investigating where you can source some, online or near you.
The sections on how to use the book, defining tasting terms and the guide to regional varietal classics and blends and wine styles are all helpful to getting the most out of the book.
Its consistent style and content make it suitable for both avid wine collectors and novices looking to gain a better understanding of local wines. It makes a great gift for the wine lover in your life, too.
