Wine Communicators annouces eight award winners for 2016
Including Wine Communicator of the Year
Wine Communicators of Australia (WCA) announced the eight winners of its Wine Communicator Awards at an exciting Awards Night at the Four Seasons Hotel on the 8th November, including the coveted Wine Communicator of the Year.
This year, the Wine Communicator of the Year was awarded to Gourmet Traveller WINE Magazine, the first time the award has gone to a business not an individual.
The Wine Communicator of the Year is selected by the Board of Wine Communicators of Australia from the category winners, who this year are:
- Digital Wine Communicator of the Year – Jane Thomson
- Best New Wine Writer Award – Josh Martin
- Best Published Feature Articles or Wine Column – Ben Canaider
- Best Wine Educator Award – Jenny Polack
- Best Wine Publication of the Year (trade, technical or consumer) – Gourmet Traveller WINE
- Best Wine Book (trade, technical and consumer) – Tipsy
- Best Wine Website or Wine App – Gourmet Traveller WINE
WCA Chair Angus Barnes said “last night was a fantastic culmination of a highly successful Awards and we wish to say a special thank you to our Awards Night partner Riedel.”
“This has become our most important event on the annual WCA calendar – certainly in terms of who we are, what we stand for and our aspirations for the future,”
“I particularly want to congratulate our new Wine Communicator of the Year, Gourmet Traveller WINE who in December 2017, will be celebrating its 20th year as Australia’s leading drinks magazine. Gourmet Traveller WINE was awarded two category winners, Best Wine Publication or the Year and Best Wine Website or Wine App and is the fitting winner for our prestigious Wine Communicator of the Year Award.”
The awards have operated as a standalone event for several years attracting an incredible mix of talent from right across the communications mix.
In 2016 WCA is delighted that Jane Thomson is recognised as the Digital Communicator of the Year for the second time (having also won the category in 2013) and that the awards recognise such a great blend of new and established talent.
Gourmet Traveller WINE has hotly contested a number of categories in the last few years and won the category for Best Wine Website or Wine App in 2015 and has won the category again this year thanks to launch of the digital edition on iPhone and Android this year.
In April 2016, Gourmet Traveller WINE enjoyed a total redesign, everything from the cover and the logo to the layout and the visual elements have been re-crafted in line with the modern era. New writers have joined the existing and fiercely independent team but as always, the heart and soul of the magazine remains the same.
Gourmet Traveller WINE is on the cutting edge of digital publishing, moving away from the page-turner style iPad app that makes up a majority of the marketplace, and towards a uniquely bespoke, accessible and cross-platform digital experience.
Subscribing to the app gives user’s immediate access to nearly two year’s worth of content including over a thousand tasting notes from the world’s top wine writers, food and wine matching recipes, local and international travel guides, and short documentaries.
Ten experienced and respected wine industry professionals were selected to judge entries in six of the awards categories, with three panels each assessing two categories. The New Wine Writer of the Year Award is judged independently.
Wine Communicators of Australia was established as a national not-for-profit company in December 2010 growing out of the well-respected Wine Press Clubs of NSW, Victoria and South Australia. It aims to be Australia's pre-eminent organisation connecting business professionals working with wine and currently has more than 500 members.
WCA’s annual program includes networking events, webinars and its prestigious lunches in association with three major capital city wine shows – Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. It also runs the annual Wine Communicator Awards and Legend of the Vine Awards.
