Barossa’s 2019 wines will be sought out early, as an exceptional quality but low-yielding harvest wrapped-up in mid-April – the earliest harvest-finish in living memory.

With a very dry winter and spring, frost events on 29 September and 8 November which disrupted bud burst and flowering, windy conditions during flowering, a hail storm hitting some vineyards on 22 November, and hot, dry conditions in January and February, 2019 will be the lowest-yielding Barossa vintage of the past decade.

The lower yields are resulting in Barossa shiraz and cabernet sauvignon with great colour, intense flavours and firm tannin structure, while grenache and mataro have been described as 'exceptional' and are shaping up to be 2019 vintage standouts.

On most soil types, vineyards irrigated in winter have retained better soil moisture and healthier crops than those irrigated later in the season. Vineyards which have been ‘reworked’ to convert older cordons with spurs to cane pruning – largely to manage Eutypa [Ed: a wood rot of grape vines, also called 'dead arm'] – have also fared better.

Data from Barossa Grape & Wine Association’s (BGWA) 'demonstration vineyards' project shows that vineyards with mulch under-vine and mid-row swards experienced cooler soil temperatures, less evaporation, more consistent ripening of fruit, and higher bunch weights, compared with vines grown in bare soil.

The lack of rainfall means Barossa’s vineyards have not experienced any disease pressure this season.

In summary, Barossa’s high quality 2019 vintage wines will be very limited in their release volumes further down the track. Barossa wine lovers are advised to seek them out as early as possible, to avoid missing out.
