The new development is a bold venture for Mitolo and is the talk of the McLaren Vale region. It’s a unique and daring structure, incorporating 10 shipping containers joined by glass that frames breathtaking views of a natural creek, vast vineyards and the Willunga Ranges.

The surfaces are a mixture of tactile elements, off-form concrete and natural timber floors inspired by the look of oak barrels. There are raked ceilings and lots of black, a nod to the famous Mitolo wine label.

The landscape design by Oxigen takes its cues from Mediterranean and local areas and helps the main structure stand in harmony with its environment. The outdoor spaces relate directly to the cellar door, kitchen and dining areas with timber decks ensuring a smooth transition between indoors and outdoors.

The stunning development represents the latest chapter in the evolving Mitolo success story and Frank Mitolo reckons it will be the most exciting. “When this property came on the market I sensed there was something special about it and that we could realise our dream here,” he said.

“Then it was a three-year process to design and build with great attention to detail. The project kept growing from tasting room to also a restaurant and then a large function space. I wanted the space to represent the brand and its people. It needed to be unique and special.”

The experience

The new Mitolo tasting room offers far more than the traditional cellar door tasting experience.

It’s a luxury, premium environment where the expert team takes guests on a journey through the Mitolo range, telling the story of each wine and explaining what makes them so unique and sought after both in Australia and overseas.

There are three structured tasting experiences, each one named after the roads surrounding the vineyards from where Mitolo’s fruit is sourced:

  • “Hahn Road” – $15 for five wines from the Jester range, plus accompaniments from the kitchen.
  • “Paddy’s Row” – $20 for five wines from the Small Batch range, plus accompaniments from the kitchen.
  • “Flour Mill Road” – $25 for five wines from the Single Vineyard range, all reds, plus accompaniments from the kitchen.

New release and premium wines are always on offer, while wine lovers can also taste Mitolo’s icon wine, the revered Marsican, which retails for $235 per bottle: 40ml tastings cost $15, or you can spoil yourself with a full glass for $55.

The tasting bar can accommodate 18 people and there’s also a private tasting booth that seats 10. Wine Club members are given priority for the booth, where they can enjoy a complimentary tasting for two.

Single group bookings of up to 10 can be booked in advance. The new venue also has a private 14-person dining space for group bookings of
10 or more. This can be used for private tastings ahead of lunch or dinner in the restaurant.

Mitolo offers small complimentary tastings from the Jester range for those driving, not drinking. Water and coffee is also available.

Visitors can purchase a bottle of Mitolo wine to drink on site, and/or purchase a bottle or a glass from the restaurant wine list.
