McLaren Vale Grape Wine & Tourism Association has awarded Peter Lloyd from Coriole Vineyards the 2017 Wayne Thomas Scholarship – supporting the development of future Australian wine judges and McLaren Vale ambassadors.

Named after prominent McLaren Vale wine identity, the late Wayne Thomas, scholarship recipients receive a fully-funded place at the Australian Wine Research Institute’s Advanced Wine Assessment Course (AWAC) and the opportunity to judge as an Associate Judge in the 2017 McLaren Vale Wine Show, one of Australia’s most significant wine shows.

As Sales and Export Manager at Coriole Vineyards,Peter is looking forward to adding to his wine knowledge through the educational opportunities the Wayne Thomas Scholarship provides.

“I think it’s a great scholarship - the combination of the AWAC and then an entry into Wine Show judging is a great combination. One really motivates the other, the training and then the practice,” said Mr Lloyd.

“I look forward to building further skills to analyse wine, whether it be faults, wine making techniques or viticultural effects, and then using the correct terminology to be a highly beneficial member of the winemaking team and when travelling around Australia and the world talking about wine and the region.”

Through the AWAC, Peter will experience different wine styles from around the world and develop advanced sensory vocabulary and palate calibration alongside esteemed industry peers. These skills will be exercised later in 2017 whilst judging the McLaren Vale Wine Show.

McLaren Vale Grape Wine and Tourism Association General Manager, Jennifer Lynch, reaffirms the region’s reputation as a home of talented and passionate wine industry ambassadors.

“The scholarship enables recipients to advance their judging profile whilst also developing knowledge and experience to benefit our region and industry,” said Ms Lynch.

The Wayne Thomas Scholarship is funded from proceeds raised through the annual McLaren Vale Wine Show consumer events and awards luncheon, the Winemakers Bushing Lunch.
