Australian book, Tomato: know, sow, grow, feast wins Gold in the ‘Home and Garden’ category at the prestigious Independent Publisher Awards in New York (2019), beating thousands of submissions from around the globe.

Tomato was written and published by Penny Woodward, Janice Sutton and Karen Sutherland, and was part-sponsored and supported by the Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens in Hobart, Tasmania. Tasmanian gardening icon (and former ABC Gardening Australia Presenter) Peter Cundall and Rodney Dunn co-owner of the award-winning ‘The Agrarian Kitchen’ & ‘Agrarian Kitchen Eatery’, passionate tomato growers both, contributed the foreword to the book.

Director of the Independent Publisher Awards, Jim Barnes, said of this year’s submissions:

“ The quality of this year's entries was much creativity, so much talent…This year's medal-winning books came from authors around the world: we had winners from 5 Australian states, 7 Canadian provinces,42 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia and Guam, plus France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, and 7 winners from around the U.K.”

“With the inspirational storytelling of the fiction and the problem solving of the non-fiction, independent publishing is all about compassion for people and dedication to improving the world. Congratulations to all the medal winners for their independent spirit and dedication to making the world a better place!"

The ‘IPPY’ Awards were established in 1996 and are one of the oldest, most established and respected Independent Book Awards in the book industry. They are also the first awards program open exclusively to independents. More than 5,000 IPPY’s have been awarded to publishers and authors throughout the world.

The book has been described by Peter Cundall as: “… the ultimate book on tomatoes, brimming with information based on experience. It covers everything anyone ever needs to know about selecting, growing and using the best and tastiest tomatoes in all districts and climates”.

It was launched at the Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens as part of the Gardens 200th anniversary celebrations in October 2018 by Her Excellency, Kate Warner, the Governor of the state. A month following the book’s launch, Tomato made the Melbourne Age's‘Best Seller’ list, selling out within 3 months. The book continues to sell well.
