Mewstone is a 3 hectare vineyard on farmland near the small town of Flowerpot in Tasmania’s South East.

Named after Mewstone Rock, the point from which the D’Entrecasteaux Channel was discovered in 1792, the vineyard is perched on north-facing slopes overlooking that very waterway.

Brothers Jonny and Matthew Hughes bought the old cherry farm in 2010 and by early 2011 had planted 2ha of mostly pinot noir with some chardonnay, shiraz, riesling and sauvignon blanc vines.

Whilst the Mewstone vines were being nurtured, Jonny and Matthew started winemaking under the Hughes & Hughes label. This allows them to use quality grapes from other vineyards to produce small batches using the more unconventional wine-making techniques Jonny encountered in his world travels. It’s an exciting exploration of the other regions and styles of Tasmania!

There are plans for a cellar door in the future but wine purchases can be made online and by arrangement. Read more and enquire about Mewstone and Hughes & Hughes wines on the website link above.
