Federation Uni TAFE has proudly hosted Plate Up Ballarat’s fabulous pie competition since the 1st of May, and on June 5 it was a great pleasure to announce the critics choice awards for best pie.

And the pie competition, also supported by Visit Victoria and the Western Bulldogs, continues with a wonderful opportunity for the people to now have their voice heard! Voting closes on the 23rd July and the winner announced on the 29th July.

The Critics Choice

Made up of a panel of foodie experts, a team of critics announced the winning pies at Housey Housey at The Forge. The judges, headed by food writer Richard Cornish and local culinary genius Peter Ford, blind tasted, tested and rated each pie. They awarded:

Equal first place to:

  • Webster’s Market & Café for their Pecan & Porter Pie, and
  • The Lane @ The George Hotel for their Pear, Blackberry & Rosewater Pie

Second place to Craigs Royal Hotel’s Mushroom & Leek Pithivier Pie

Third place to Eclectic Tastes for their Egg & Bacon Pie.

Special mentions were made for:

  • The Western Hotel’s Lamb & Rosemary Pie
  • Freight Bar & Restaurant’s Cheesy Brisket Mac & Cheese Deluxe Pie
  • The Healthy Hub’s Curried Veggie Shepherd’s Pot Pie
  • Kittelty’s at The Art Gallery’s Coq au Vin Pie
  • Nouvelle Orleans’ Southern Sweet Potato Pie
  • And a collaborative effort by Salt Kitchen Charcuterie, Le Peche Gourmand, Western Plains Pork & Fika Coffee Brewers offering a Torte de Pork (which can be enjoyed at Fika).

The People's Choice

Now it’s up to the people to vote for what we believe is the best pie in town! All participating local venues must feature 3 local ingredients in their pie. Licensed venues will also pair their pie with a locally brewed beer or cider from Red Duck Brewery, Cubby Haus Brewing, Athletic Club Brewery or 321 Cider.

90 home grown producers have been showcased at Plate Up Ballarat’s 38 events held throughout May. Now 19 of the city’s famed restaurants and cafes will continue to serve up their pies until 23 July.

Event Director, Kate Davis, said: “May has seen Plate Up Ballarat provide a wonderful showcase of all the incredible local talent we have in Ballarat and the surrounding region. I couldn’t be prouder of how far our industry has come and how Plate Up Ballarat has been embraced by our community. We’ve supported & promoted 38 events throughout May, and now we can continue to visit all the venues taking part in the Pie Competition. Not just to enjoy their exciting pie creations, but also to vote for our favourites as part of the “People’s Choice” award.”
