The North East Cookbook - from the Mountains to the Murray

The North East Cookbook – from the Mountains to the Murray by professional photographer Bindy Welsh truly captures the diverse beauty and talent encompassed within the North East of Victoria. Her talent and passion for the region shows at every turn of the page in this visual feast of recipes and images.

The North East of Victoria, encompassing the Alpine Valleys, Beechworth, Glenrowan, King Valley, Milawa Gourmet Region and Rutherglen, is one of my favourite areas to visit. I can happily spend days exploring its valleys, plains and alpine regions and cruising from one fine vista, winery or gourmet providore to the next.

Beginning high up in the alpine town of Bright The North East Cookbook brings together a collection of recipes from cafes and restaurants, wineries, gourmet provedores and primary producers, each of which is richly illustrated with Bindy’s beautiful imagery.

From Bright, the book wends its way down the Ovens Valley and King Valley then turns north through the Milawa Gourmet Region and towns of Beechworth and Rutherglen amongst others before ending up in Wahgunyah on the mighty Murray River. It should be noted, each business featured in this book has paid a small fee to participate.

Within you’ll find an excellent range of mouth watering recipes from over 40 regional businesses, all quite approachable for the home cook and clearly laid out. Highlights for me include the Homemage Tagliatelle with Wild Mushrooms from renowned Simone’s of Bright, Seared Angus Beef Fillet and Smoked Harrietville Trout Dip from the Hedonistic Hikers and Mary’s Lamb Meat Balls from Rutherglen Premium Lamb.

What I like about this cookbook is that it showcases the quality of produce across the region, highlighting it as the ‘foodie’ destination it has surely become. Only 40 odd businesses are featured however this barely scratches the surface of the depth of great food available across the region. And while the Milawa Gourmet Region and Beechworth have long been known as gourmet regions and other areas such as Rutherglen long known for their fine wines, this is the first recipe book I’ve come across which promotes the food of the region as a whole and I'm sure it won't be the last.

While the imagery is gorgeous and the recipes are tasty and approachable, one area I feel could do with a little more work is the layout. The names and location of each restaurant or producer is often lost at the bottom of each page with little to differentiate it from the text of the recipe. I would also have liked to have more information on each: a list of contact details, maps showing their locations and perhaps some features on the people behind the food.

Purchase this book as a memento of a trip to the North East or as inspiration for a loved one to plan a visit soon.
