Suzy Spoon runs Australia’s only vegetarian butcher – part butcher, part café and part commercial kitchen. Suzy makes all products on-site without machinery. Vegetarian Kitchen is her foray into the world of cookbooks.

The book aims to provide recipes that are simple, hearty, and showing that leaving out the meat does not mean leaving out the flavour. The recipes are designed to be used by the everyday person, using simple ingredients and with straight-forward instructions.

The usual categories range from breakfasts, soups and salads through to condiments, dressings and desserts.

If you are a vegetarian – or thinking of becoming a vegetarian, planning on decreasing your meat intake, or you just like vegetarian food – this book has every meal type covered, including drinks. If you were in the beginning stages of converting from meat, Vegetarian Kitchen would be a great place to start due to its range of recipes.

A selective list, but by no means exhaustive, of some of the author's delicious recipes includes Banana Pancakes, Homemade Crumpets, Mushroom and Tofu Scramble, Potato and Tofu Fritters, Beer-battered Tofu Salad, Little Tomato and Spinach Pizzas, Sweet Potato and Pea Pasties, Rice Noodle Lasagne, Seitan Fillets with Cream Cheese and Silverbeet, Cashew and Vanilla Custard, Chelsea Buns and finally Chia, Coconut and Strawberry Popsicles.

Not only are there many recipes, but also a great range of types. Also worth a mention is the drinks component of the cookbook where you can put together Pineapple and Mint Frappe, Almond Milk, Mulled Apple Cider, Rice Milk and more.

Overall the book is an easy-to-access package. It is presented well, the recipes are appealing to vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, and also caters to vegans (if a recipe is not already vegan it is not too hard to alter it so that it is). It gives small explanations about main ingredients used in the book with tips on how to achieve the best results, and most ingredients are reasonably easy to source.

Finally, if you are trying to be a bit more environmentally friendly this is a great book for finding a tasty recipe to go with your meat-free days. Vegetarian Kitchen is an excellently practical book that will not disappoint people looking to broaden their vegetarian repertoire.
