Dal Zotto Estate Wines, King Valley

With this year’s theme for Melbourne Food and Wine festival ‘a sense of place’, the Dal Zotto family felt they really had something worth celebrating. And the best kind of celebration is a long lunch, with plenty of wine!

Since emigrating from Italy, Otto and Elena Dal Zotto have worked hard to make a place for themselves in this new land. Over the years, veggies have been planted out, children and chooks raised, and new wine styles pioneered.

Otto realised the similarities in climate between his old home in Valdobbiadene and his new one in the King Valley, and brought the taste of home – prosecco, pinot grigio and sangiovese – to our tables.

His sons, Michael and Christian, continue the winemaking tradition, demonstrating how both the wine and the family have been shaped by the unique place in which they are made.

An enormous part of this place is its people; fellow producers, chefs and winemakers have become firm friends, and together have created an outstanding food and wine community in Victoria’s High Country.

The family is asking their friends to bring along a favourite dish, wine or home-grown produce - friends include respected chefs, bread bakers, cheesemakers, beekeepers and winegrowers from King Valley, Beechworth, Rutherglen, Glenrowan and the Alpine Valleys.

Set under 140 year old gum trees, overlooking working vineyards and the tobacco kilns that provided the family's start in the region, with a five course menu sourced from local produce and exceptional wines – there’s a place for you at the table, too.
