In this latest instalment of the Produce to Platter series Daniele Wilton and Jonette George take us on an informative journey through Daylesford and The Macedon Ranges, Ballarat and the Pyrenees.

When Jonette George and her daughter, Daniele Wilton, decided to write a book about the Macedon Ranges region, they were confronted with several challenges.

Firstly, they discovered  three distinct regions
within two hours of each other, bursting with outstanding produce and wine.

Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges blurs boundaries with the Ballarat and District wine region, which in turn blurs into the Pyrenees to the west (centred around Avoca). With this in mind they made the sensible decision to include the producers, providores, viticulturists, vignerons and chefs of each region into one book.

But then, to cover them all! What fun they must have had. With photography by Bianca Wite and Paul Fletcher, they hit the road, and brought the regions to life in a vivid manner. Produce to Platter: Daylesford and The Macedon Ranges, Ballarat and the Pyrenees does a great job in capturing the feel of each and showcasing the best producers.

Produce to Platter: Daylesford and The Macedon Ranges, Ballarat and the Pyrenees is made up of detailed listings of wineries and produce providers in alphabetical order by region for quick and easy reference.

The listings are an easy read and give relevant information about each venue; from foods and wines on offer through to the notes on the house special or the vine adoption program at Gisborne Peak Winery (who also have great pizza!).

Co-editor of The Age Good Food Guide for fifteen years, Rita Erlich, introduces Produce to Platter: Daylesford and The Macedon Ranges, Ballarat and the Pyrenees. She helps to shine a light on the treasures you will find in both the region and in the book, recommending ways you might plan your visit to ensure you get the most out of it, all while interweaving the rich history of these regions.

Other key features of the guide include a history spanning from information on the ancient aboriginal custodians of the area to more recent histories of the key historic properties, an index of recipes including photographs of each dish, information on the regional food and wine organisations and their members, cooking schools and a summary of major events.

Each region also has its own map and list of winery and produce providers included from that region.

Many of the listings are complemented by recipes provided by the resident chef. As you read the description of the Red Wine Pears, Gingerbread and Hazelnuts provide by Alla Wolf Tasker, of Lake House, you can almost smell what I can only imagine will be divine once I have the time to try and replicate it.

Amongst the many photographs, personal favourites include the collection of animal photos at the front of the book and the photo of the vintage posters at Eclectic Tastes in Ballarat .

Overall Produce to Platter: Daylesford and The Macedon Ranges, Ballarat and the Pyrenees is a beautifully produced and presented guide full of wineries and venues.

No matter if you visit regularly, or you're a newcomer, this guide will ensure you get the most out of your trip. In particular those new to these great regions will find this a handy tool to help them narrow down their list of ‘must’ visit venues.
