Mangia! Mangia! Gatherings: The Spirit of coming together - Angela Villella and Teresa Oates

Second in the Mangia! Mangia! (Eat! Eat!) series Gatherings: The Spirit of Coming Together is a cookbook inspired by the world that revolves around Italian cooking. Let me tell you straight up that if you like Italian cooking and the Italian way of life then go out and buy this book right now. The cookbook covers what is expected of you at specific gatherings and gives you the recipes to accompany the event.

I must admit that this is the first cookbook I have reviewed that has recommended recipes for a funeral. But, that’s what this book is about – families coming together, and a funeral is but one event in amongst many.

Mangia! Mangia! Gatherings covers food for christenings, weddings, Christmas and Easter to name a few. It also has general recipes that are more homely. Not a bad idea and there are certainly some fantastic recipes.

Arancini Balls; Fried Potato and Rice Croquettes; Stuffed Eggs and Crumbed Chicken or Veal with Tomato and Cheese are some of the celebratory dishes that would certainly make an impression at any feast I have ever been to.

But there’s more, Mangia! Mangia! Gatherings has a whole section devoted to the biscuit tray. Almond Meringues would be a sure fire hit at a party, as would Choc-nut Biscuits or Cannoli filled with Ricotta or Lemon Custard. If you like cooking for the masses this cookbook will set you up.

The book goes on to cover cakes, liqueurs, pastries, tarts, salads, meats and anything else that has anything to do with Italian cooking. As far as recipes are concerned it really has variety covered.

It also has smaller sections giving tips on how to create pizza dough, dried oregano, passata and pasta.

There are lots of photos of family, food and people digging in. It has advice on what gathering as a family should mean and it definitely pays attention to the specifics of Italian cooking from the home cook’s point of view.

The layout of the book is attractive and it oozes family togetherness. If you are wanting to make a start with Italian cooking or if you want to broaden your Italian cooking scope this book is for you. If your mother or grandmother has Italian heritage, loves cooking and has her own book of Italian recipes many of these will be similar – definitely authentic and destined to become a treasure.
