Twelve trophy-winning wines from the 2014 Royal Melbourne Wine Awards (RMWA) will be selected for tasting in Hong Kong next April, in front of some of the city’s most influential buyers and collectors as part of the Great Wines of Australia Hong Kong (GWOA HK).

The GWOA is an event conducted by internationally renowned wine critic, wine editor and RMWA international judge James Suckling of, and Hong Kong Tatler Magazine. Suckling is wine editor for all Asia Tatler magazines with nine editions across Asia.

GWOA is held across two days and includes an exclusive invitation only collector’s dinner on 29 April, followed by a consumer and trade tasting on 30 April.

This is a first time collaboration between, Hong Kong Tatler and an Australian- based wine show, with RMWA partnering to profile Australia’s best of the best premium wines from the forthcoming Wine Awards. Tom Carson, RMWA Chair of Judges will select the trophy wines that will form part of the Awards showcase.

Suckling (USA, resident of Hong Kong) along with one of Australia’s most prolific wine commentators and authors, Nick Stock, will play the all-important role of curator for the other wines that will be featured in the GWOA. ‘The focus of the Series is on tasting great wines from Australia and all the wines served must be rated 90 points or above’ says Suckling.

‘Australia is known for its diverse and high quality wine industry. I’m looking forward to returning to Melbourne for the judging of the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards. While I am in Australia I also plan to visit some other wineries across the country with Nick to find the best wines to profile at the Great Wines of Australia event. The event is a great opportunity for Australian wines to be tasted back in Hong Kong by the local wine industry and consumer audiences,’ he says.

Judging for the RMWA is taking place in Melbourne from 6-10 October with the presentation dinner taking place on 16 October. Twelve of the trophy winning wines will be provided the invaluable opportunity to showcase their drops to an international audience within months of their RMWA win. The Great Wines of Australia event is a stepping stone into the Asian market for those award winning RMWA wineries that are selected to participate.

Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria CEO Mark O’Sullivan says, ‘The Great Wines of Australia event is a new initiative for the RMWA and is an added benefit for the winning winemakers. This promotional opportunity is another way we are rewarding and recognising excellence in Australia’s wine industry.’

‘It’s a privilege to welcome James back to the RMWA panel following his prior judging role with us in 2012. He is respected globally and brings with him extensive experience and expertise. We are very pleased to have James’ endorsement of what we do here in Australia, in particular at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards and we are excited to have this opportunity to work with him again on the Great Wine Series’.
