Passing Clouds 2014 Macedon ranges Chardonnay

 

Passing Clouds has a strong reputation for its acclaimed red wines, think Shiraz and Cabernet, but their estate at Musk is home to the vines producing fruit for the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. 

Here are tasting notes for the recently released chardonnay.


Macedon Ranges Chardonnay 2014
12.5% alc/vol

The coolness of the estate site allows the Graeme and Cameron to make this unique style of Australian chardonnay. They get such high levels of natural acidity in the grapes that they are able to complete malolactic fermentation (and get the added complexity from this) and still retain the appealing racy acidity. The extended lees contact helps flesh out the palate but still keeps the wine fresh and vibrant.

Tasting notes:
Golden straw in colour, this classic Macedon Chardonnay shows varietal characters of honeyed pear, apple and citrus. Extended lees maturation and stirring assists in giving the palate a superb textural quality along with an attractive line of acidity

Winemaking notes:
Grown at rhe estate vineyard with a top elevation of 770m ASL. Seriously cool. Razor sharp canopy management. Harvested by hand with fruit sorting occurring in the vineyard.

Partially whole bunch pressed and partially crushed bunches into press with stalks. Full malolactic fermentation. Lees maceration included lees stirring weekly.

Food Matching:
Excellent with Thai food as well as seafood dishes.
