Rutherglen is always "the place to be" on the Queen's Birthday Weekend (Saturday June 6 and Sunday June 7), as festival-goers taste the latest new release wines across the 18 participating wineries and indulge in the excitement that is Winery Walkabout!

From humble beginnings in 1974, Rutherglen Winery Walkabout has grown in to one of the ultimate wine events on the Australian calendar.

For just $30 wine lovers will receive their wristband and Winery Walkabout tasting glass that is valid for both Saturday and Sunday, and then they are set to spend the Queen's Birthday Weekend tasting great wines and enjoying the fun at the region's renowned wineries.

With crisp table wines, warming reds, and world-class, luscious muscats on offer, Winery Walkabout is a great way to taste and compare some of the best new wines from Rutherglen.

Along with the wine tasting, Winery Walkabout plays host to fabulous entertainment and live music, back vintage tastings, fortified Masterclasses, and delicious winery breakfasts.

On top of this, add some friendly community events like the great Australian barrel rolling competition down High Street in Rutherglen (Sunday, June 7), the Rutherglen Rotary Country Fair (Sunday, June 7) showcasing some 300 stall holders, and the infamous Rutherglen grape stomp (Sunday, June 7), and you have non-stop fun for friends and family of all ages!

A few of the special winery events over the Festival weekend include a range of warming breakfasts on Saturday June 6 and Sunday June 7, such as the Cofield Wines Sparkling Burgundy Breakfasts provided by The Pickled Sisters Cafe, and the John Gehrig Family Breakfasts, both sure to get the Walkabout day started. Jones Winery Cafe will also run a "pop-up" Curry House in the art deco-style Fire Station on Main Street. For two nights only over Winery Walkabout weekend from 6pm, this is an experience not to be missed!

Winery Walkabout is Victoria's original wine festival, and even after forty years, it is gaining in following and momentum each year. More than ten thousand people come to Rutherglen to enjoy the laughter, wine and food with friends. It’s fresh, young-at-heart, and just plain fun!

Transport is easy over the weekend thanks to the TAC Shuttle Bus (just $27 per day) which leaves from the Rutherglen Wine Experience and Visitor Information Centre in the middle of town, and circles around three bus routes and between all 18 wineries. Festival-goers can hop on and off as they like in this safe and hassle-free way to tour the wineries.

The Regional Bus for $37 per day offers return pick up and drop off to ten regional towns around Rutherglen, and the TAC Shuttle Bus service is also included within that price. As part of the TAC Shuttle Bus service there is also complimentary wine check-in: wine lovers can leave their purchases with the bus driver where it will be safely stored at the Rutherglen Wine Centre for collection at the end of the day.

Bus tickets sell out, so festival-goers are advised to buy tickets in advance on to avoid missing out on this excellent service.

A Designated Driver Reward Campaign, also sponsored by TAC operates all weekend. With complimentary tea, coffee and soft drink and a competition to win a $200 fuel voucher for designated drivers, the TAC and Winemakers of Rutherglen support and encourage designated drivers when visiting the Rutherglen wineries.
