The Best Walks of Geelong, the Bellarine and the Brisbane Ranges is a full-colour guide to forty walks of the area.

It comes complete with maps and photography associated with each walk and is quite comprehensive in its efforts to clearly spell out what each walk has going for it and for what level of walker it applies to.

This guide covers walk grades, walking with children, prams and limited mobility access, public transport and dog access thus alleviating any possible concerns associated with leaving home, getting to the destination and finding out that there are restrictions in force. It also has information on the traditional owners of the land, general safety tips for walking, birdlife and native flora.

The areas covered are Greater Geelong, The Bellarine Peninsula, The Surf Coast and The Brisbane Ranges.

The text is set out in easy to access and highly navigable sections. It includes a section called ‘walks at a glance’ that gives basic information about each walk in the book. This includes the type of walk (generally circuit, one-way or return), the time it would likely to take to complete it, the distance of the walk and the grade (easy, medium, hard).

In addition it even has whether there are cafes or swimming opportunities available on the route.

Another feature of note is the walk variation segments that can give you alternative ways to walk to see specific areas of interest or to make a bigger walk smaller so you can ‘try before you buy’. Especially good for those just wanting a casual day out or those with kids.

Further, the text often points out local tourist attractions that are not far from walks.

Having tested out a couple of the walks pushing a double stroller containing two children and a packed lunch I have found the descriptions of the grade, time and distance to be accurate.

I also found the selection of walks inviting. Previously I have only really walked some of the coastal tracks but this guide helped me to explore Geelong in particular much better. A day exploring the Heritage walk and the Botanic Gardens left me wanting to spend more time in this historic town.

Overall it is an incredibly handy and well-sized guide that will take you to many fascinating spots within the regions it covers. Whether it be from the Queenscliff rail trail or to the You Yangs there is really a walk in here for all types.

This is not simply just a book for the serious hiker, it is a great book for families to pick up for the casual day out or for a week long family holiday.
