Yarra Valley winemaking pioneer Oakridge has been honoured with some outstanding awards to both the winery and restaurant recently.

Whilst welcoming the recognition for their wine and hospitality, Oakridge is hoping these awards also provide some compelling reasons for visitors to take a leisurely drive from Melbourne to the Yarra.

James Halliday Wine Companion 2018

Starting in early August was a Red 5 Star rating by James Halliday in the 2018 Halliday Wine Companion along with four wines receiving 97 points, five with 96 points, three with 95 and another four with 94.

Added to these accolades was being amongst the top ten best value wineries (12 of the 16 wines scoring 94 and above received the value rosette).

Oakridge was thrilled when James Halliday noted "If any or all of these wines by these wineries were blind-tasted against similarly priced wines from France, elsewhere in Europe and the US, the Australian wines would win hands down." One of Australia’s Hottest Restaurants

Oakridge restaurant has once again taken its place amongst Australia’s hottest restaurants in The Weekend Australian’s Hot 50 Guide for 2017.

This is not a numerical listing of ‘best’ restaurants, rather a snapshot of dining in Australia today. It’s about the convergence of elements that distinguish a brilliant restaurant experience from the ordinary.

"At Oakridge we are all about hand-crafted wines and food and the marriage of the two," says Oakridge General Manager, Danny Kane. “David Bicknell is renowned for making wines that work beautifully with food and our co-head chefs Matt Stone and Jo Barrett create food that works beautifully with that wine. The result is a rare thing – contemporary vineyard food with real soul and affinity with the vines."

John Leathlean writes "If a winemaker strives for a singular expression of site, as does Oakridge’s David Bicknell, it follows the associated restaurant should too. Few nail it.

But in the powerful partnership of chefs Matt Stone and Jo Barrett at Oakridge’s super-modern Yarra Valley HQ, we have repeatedly found food that speaks of the region, the wines and the increasing maturity of chefs whose ideas straddle modernity and classicism ever so deftly.”

The Savour Australia™ Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence

Oakridge then went on to win two Awards for Excellence at these awards in the categories of:

  • People, Produce, Place Tourism Restaurant
  • Restaurant in a Winery

The Savour Australia™ Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence is a nationally recognised, independently judged awards program that recognises exceptional service and culinary talent across Australia. The awards have been designed to recognise and promote industry best practice.

"Oakridge’s zero-waste menu approach, coupled with our commitment to sourcing produce directly from the Yarra Valley region or from our extensive kitchen (which provides 50-80% of the ingredients featured on the menus) is what sets us apart", says David Kane.

“Our ‘hand-crafted’ philosophy, can be experienced in the restaurant simply by tasting our house-milled and baked bread, our own cheeses made from local Jersey milk and dry-aged meats, including poultry. It’s how our chefs express their passion for producing great food from scratch that complement the vineyard and our wines so well.”

The awards noted that “Oakridge continues to offer innovative and creative experiences and events that provide guests with a high-quality experience. Each member of staff is an expert in their field and their knowledge is showcased across all product offerings including the menus, restaurant and wines.”

All these awards surely add up to some compelling reasons to visit the Yarra Valley soon!
