Winemaker Viv Thomson celebrates his 50th vintage
Best's Wines of Great Western, Victoria
This vintage marks the 50th consecutive vintage for Viv Thomson of Best's Wines. A remarkable achievement and one we doubt could be matched by many people in the Australian wine industry.
Viv, is a graduate of the acclaimed Roseworthy College and the fourth generation owner at Best's and the winery owes its modern day reputation as a quality producer and its numerous accolades at wine shows and by critics alike to him.
He has been recognised by the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival as a 'legend' for his services to the wine industry. He was also President of the Victorian Wine Industry Association for many years, being recognised with a 'Distinguished' service award.
Now semi-retired, Viv is known for his fine palate, his remarkable personal cellar and for his many years of service as an Australian National Wine Show judge.
Considered the patriarch of Great Western, with not only an in-depth knowledge of the region and its vineyards, but also international wine styles, Viv is regarded by many as one of Australia's leading authorities on wine.
In 2008 Viv handed over the running of the company to his eldest son Ben. Together with talented Best's winemaker Adam Wadewitz, the team continue to push winemaking boundaries combining traditional winemaking methods with modern technology to create wines of renown and integrity.
For over 140 years, Best's has continuously been producing wine in the Great Western wine region of Victoria and is one of Australia's oldest continuously family-owned and operated wineries. They also have some of the oldest vines in Australia, producing extraordinary wines with great longevity.
