Margaret River Gourmet Escape presented by Audi marked its fifth year over the weekend of 18 – 20 November and was one of the most successful events on the 2016 food and wine event calendar. UK cooking sensation and headline guest, Nigella Lawson was joined by over 60 of Australia and the world’s leading food and wine personalities (22 local & WA, 27 interstate and 16 internationals), to celebrate the extraordinary beauty and incredible produce of the South West in Western Australia.

The three-day festival saw nearly 19,000 visitors experience the diversity of wine and food in Western Australia across 45 special events, set in over 20 extraordinary locations including vineyards, in a cave, nestled in the forest, on the beach and out at sea.

Nigella was joined by an incredible line up of the world’s leading food and wine influencers who travelled from around the country and hundreds of thousands kilometres across the world, and created amazing friendships, stories, collaborations, menus and events. Influencers included English chef, restaurateur, cook book author and TV presenter, Rick Stein; French-born and San Francisco based chef, Dominique Crenn (Atelier Crenn & Petit Crenn, USA) who was recently named The World’s Best Female Chef by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants; Joan Roca (*#2 restaurant in the world - El Celler de Can Roca, Spain); Mauro Colagreco (#6 restaurant in the world - Mirazur, France); Andoni Luis Aduriz (#7 Mugaritz, Spain); Isaac McHale (#26 The Clove Club, UK); Ashley Palmer-Watts (#49 Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, UK & Melbourne); David Thompson (#37 Nahm, Thailand and Long Chim, Singapore & Perth); Ana Roš (Hiša Franko, Slovenia); and Janice Wong (2am Dessert Bar, Singapore), to name a few.

Says Nigella, “Before I came to Margaret River I had people telling me that my experience at Gourmet Escape was going to be so magical and was going to change my life. It sounded too good to be true so I prepared myself for disappointment, but I have to say it has well and truly exceeded my expectations!

It’s very hard to put into words why this place is special, but there’s a feeling about the place that is both incredibly relaxing but uplifting at the same time, which is in a way an odd combination but it's just so beautiful.

There’s something about the air, as the way that everything looks, and I have to say it’s nice to see a sky like this and the blue water, the food the wine, when you’re surrounded by beauty and the food’s great and the wine’s great – I don't know what you’ve got to complain about.”

Since its inception in 2012, the festival has welcomed more than 150 of the world’s most influential chefs, food and wine influencers to the region, and nearly 80,000 passionate food and wine loving visitors.
