Who doesn’t love to uncover the small vineyards in a wine region? It’s a joyous part of the wine touring adventure when you stumble across a eclectic cellar door – bonus! on the one day of the week it’s open – and find the most delectable wine you’ve ever tasted!

In South West WA, the small family wineries of the Margaret River region have collaborated on two projects so you won’t risk missing those hidden gems everyone talks of.

The first initiative is the Small Family Wine Trail, a brochure which has just been published with the help of Tourism WA. This one is a collaboration of wineries that:

  • Are 100% Australian owned
  • Use 100% Margaret River fruit
  • Use 95% of fruit from their own vineyards for wines under the label
  • Must own or lease a vineyard
  • Must be family owned and operated (family members must work within the vineyard or winery)
  • Have a total crush under 100T
  • Produce at least the red wines on site
  • Have their own cellar door that’s open at least 1 day per week

So who are those on this special trail?

  • Windows Estate
  • Arima
  • Cape Grace Wines
  • Burnside Organic Farm
  • Brown Hill
  • Glenarty Road

The second initiative is the Small Family Vineyards booklet which is a collection of stories from eight of the smallest wine producers in the region.  The booklet highlights the importance of the small family vineyards/wineries, introduces you to the families behind the names and unearths many of the special wines that are only available from the cellar door.

This group comprises:

  • Brown Hill Estate
  • Cape Grace Wines
  • Cape Naturaliste
  • Heydon Etstate
  • Peacetree Estate
  • Rosily Vineayard
  • Windance Wines
  • Windows Estate

Also included is a helpful chart of who makes which wines so you can map your course to suit your tastebuds and of course, the all important cellar door opening times.

The group also helps you get those tasty drops home by offering to case up the wines brought on the journey and send them ahead.

These are the vineyards that share their land with sheep, pigs, fruit trees, hop fields and even trout! One focuses on Italian varieties, another is part of an organic farm but all have distinctive experiences and love sharing that with their visitors.

The Small Family Winery Trail and Small  Family Vineyards booklet can be found at Margaret River, Busselton and Dunsborough Visitors Centres and each producer listed also has them at their establishment.
