Winners of the 2015 Qantas epiQure Halliday Wine Companion Awards were announced at a sparkling gala dinner on the 28th July . The annual event marked the release of the 2016 Halliday Wine Companion, which is published by Hardie Grant Books and is on sale now.

The awards were held at the Melbourne Museum, attracting many prominent Australians who honoured the very best of Australian wine produced at vineyards across the country.

Six major awards were announced: Wine of the Year, Winery of the Year, Winemaker of the Year, Best New Winery of the Year, Best Value Winery of the Year, and Dark Horse Winery of the Year. Ten of the coveted varietal awards were also announced.

Revered wine critic James Halliday AM, founder and author of the Halliday Wine Companion, said, “The wine industry is becoming ever more global and more competitive, with a historic realignment between the markets of Europe and North America to Asia, with China now Australia’s largest market for its finest wines, followed by Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, the US and the UK (in descending order of value). Across all price points, Australian wines were exported to 123 countries by 1385 exporters of 17,387 brands.”

Guests at the invitation-only event enjoyed $117,000 worth of the year’s best wines, which complemented a five-course degustation menu incorporating produce from Qantas’ finest First Class suppliers.
