A cabernet sauvignon wins Wine of the Year for 2016
Leading international wine critic, author and educator, Jeremy Oliver, has announced that Wendouree Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 is his Wine of the Year for 2016.
Oliver said that it was harder than ever to name the Wine of the Year, because the field was stronger than ever before.
The Wine of the Year is the finest of the current-release Australian wines encountered during Oliver's year of tasting. "This year I have tasted, reviewed and written about the best collection of current release wines this country has ever put to market. I have never given so many scores about 95, never allocated five stars to so many labels and never found it harder to choose my Top 100," said Oliver.
"While several of the finalists would have made an entirely worthy winner, I'm totally satisfied I got it right."
Wendouree's red wines, each of which are made in a very similar fashion, are finely balanced and cellar-worthy styles of remarkable varietal expression and structure. The winery only sells its wines via its mailing list, which is why it's not often seen on retail shelves or restaurant lists.
Oliver said, "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is right out of the box – with all the perfume and layered depth of fruit you could imagine, deftly balanced with tight-grained oak and support by a classically firm structure of near-perfect tannins.
Personally I couldn't be happier to see a wine command recognition that so reflects the unchanging philosophies of its owners and makers. It's the product of more than forty years of painstaking work, passion and conviction."
Previous winners of this prestigious award include Giaconda Shiraz 2012, Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier 2009 and Leewin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2002.
